Should You Wait for AI Paid Search to Move Forward?

An executive said it to the Financial Times:

For a user to keep using the product and be willing to pay for it, they have to be convinced that it is the best possible answer. The problem with advertising is that the user would end up questioning everything… That is why we do not think it is wise to focus on that for the moment.

This retreat is not anecdotal. It reveals a structural fault line that is redrawing the landscape of AI search engines.

Camp 1 — The advertising model: ChatGPT and Gemini. They integrate sponsored placements into their answers. The AI answer becomes a media placement. You can buy your presence there.

Camp 2 — The trust model: Claude, Perplexity, Mistral, and others. No advertising. No slot to buy. The answer remains — in theory — built solely on the credibility and relevance of the content.

But the reality, whichever AI platform your customers use, is that no AI strategy can do without the organic.

  • In the advertising camp, your ads depend directly on your organic presence: the more your brand is structured for language models, the more relevance and authority your AI ads gain.
  • In the trust camp, organic is the only lever. There is nothing else to activate.

The consequence is simple, and non-negotiable: To exist in the AI sales channel — whatever the platform, whatever the monetization model — brands have to build two layers of organic optimization: → GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): for the brand itself — visibility, awareness, semantic authority, acquisition. → APO (Product Asset Optimization): for the references, the product pages, the attributes — the layer that turns an AI recommendation into a purchase.

GEO without APO? You exist in the answers, but you do not convert. APO without GEO? Your products are well structured, but nobody cites you.

Advertising in AI engines may be inevitable for some. Organic is inevitable for everyone.

🔥 At ResonanceMetrics, we help brands build this dual organic presence — GEO and APO — so they become references that AI engines cite and convert, whatever their monetization model.
